A Sikh marriage is usually performed in a gurudwara or any house where the holy Sikh Granth, the Guru Granth Sahib has been established. The ritual should not be performed in a hotel or marriage hall. Religious ceremonies are usually held in the morning and do not exceed a few hours. Sikh marriages are not as elaborate as Hindu weddings and are simple and mostly center on religious practices. Rituals and customs are an integral part of a typical Sikh marriage.

A Sikh marriage is also unique in that it does not require the presence of a priest to make the marriage a success. The marriage is organized in the presence of a holy book in which a man or a woman recites verses with it. The bride and groom have to make four rounds around the holy book. Also, no time is set for conducting the marriage. It can be held at any time of day or night, although marriages are mostly held in the morning.

Prior to the wedding, an engagement ceremony may be performed by the bride and groom's families, although it is not mandatory to do so. The event is usually held at the boy's home or gurudwara. It consists of Ardas (Sheikh prayer), Kirtan (hymn) and Langar (food). A kirpan, kara or Indian sweets are gifted to the groom and a traditional Indian dress and sweets are gifted to the bride.

On the wedding day, the ceremony is carried out by the baraat (family and friends of the groom) to the girls' house in the evening. They are welcomed with great joy and enthusiasm. They spend the night at the girl's house. The following day's wedding rituals are held either at the girl's home or at the local gurudwara. The celebrations continue throughout the day after the celebrations are over. The next day the bride and groom depart to begin their new life.
